How the car donation process works
Start with the title you have, even if it is from another state
A clean, readable title in your name is the easiest way to complete a Sacramento car donation title transfer, but it is not the only situation SacraCar Share can discuss. Out-of-state titles are commonly accepted as long as the ownership information is clear and the title can be signed over properly. Before pickup, look for the vehicle title, your photo ID, and any lien release paperwork if the car was financed. If you are unsure which line to sign, wait. The tow driver brings the required pickup paperwork and can point you to the correct transfer area.
If the title is lost, ask for guidance before you give up
Lost title situations happen often, especially with older vehicles, cars parked for years, or vehicles inherited from family members. Heritage for the Blind can help you navigate your state process for replacing or confirming the title before donation. In some cases, a vehicle without a physical title can still be considered, depending on the vehicle, state rules, and available ownership documents. Do not assume your car is ineligible. Clear any lien before pickup whenever possible
If a bank, credit union, or finance company is listed on the title, the lien generally must be satisfied before the vehicle can be donated. That means the loan is paid off and the lender releases its claim to the vehicle. If you already paid the loan, look for a lien release letter, stamped title, or updated title showing the lien is cleared. If you do not have proof, contact the lender and request the release. SacraCar Share can explain what to look for, but only the lender can remove or release the lien.
Handle titles in another person’s name with care
If the title is in someone else’s name, the person listed as owner usually must sign the title over to Heritage for the Blind at pickup. If the titled owner is a deceased spouse, parent, or other relative, additional documents may be required before the donation can move forward. Depending on the state and the estate situation, that may involve probate paperwork, an affidavit of heirship, a death certificate, or other proof of authority to transfer the vehicle. Because these rules vary, contact SacraCar Share first so you do not sign the wrong place or schedule too soon.
Sign over the title at pickup and keep your records
When your free tow is scheduled in the Sacramento Metro, the driver arrives at the pickup location, whether that is a home in Land Park, an apartment lot in Rancho Cordova, or a driveway in Davis. At pickup, the title is signed over to Heritage for the Blind, and the driver provides the donation and towing paperwork. After a proper title handoff, donors typically do not need a DMV visit. Keep copies of your records. For vehicles that sell for more than $500, Heritage provides IRS Form 1098-C for tax documentation.
