In Sacramento, you can still donate a car even when you’re missing both the keys and the title. The keys are the easy part: as long as a tow truck can safely reach your vehicle, our towing partner can load it onto a flatbed without keys. The title is the critical piece. First, you’ll request a duplicate California title from the DMV. Once that’s in your hands, SacraCar Share schedules free pickup anywhere in the Sacramento Metro and you still receive your full tax receipt for supporting Heritage for the Blind.
Here’s how it works in California. You’ll apply for a replacement title with the CA DMV (usually a small fee and about 1–4 weeks of processing). While you’re waiting, we can answer questions and help you plan access for a keyless pickup—whether the car is in Midtown, Elk Grove, Natomas, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, Arden-Arcade, or out in Roseville. After your duplicate title arrives, you sign it over at pickup, our driver loads your keyless vehicle with the right equipment, and your donation is complete. No repair costs, no smog worries, no towing bill—just a clean, local way to clear that problem car and help people who are blind or visually impaired.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Confirm your car’s location and tow-truck access
First, make sure your vehicle can be reached by a tow truck. Is it in a driveway in Land Park, a carport in Natomas, or a street spot in Midtown? It doesn’t need to run and it doesn’t need keys, but there must be clear access for a flatbed to back in, hook up, and safely load the car.
2. Apply for a duplicate California title with DMV
Next, request a duplicate title from the California DMV. You’ll complete the Application for Duplicate Title, pay the DMV fee, and wait for processing (often 1–4 weeks). You can start the process online or at a local DMV office like Sacramento, Folsom, or Carmichael. The title must be in your name to donate.
3. Contact SacraCar Share while your title is processing
While you’re waiting on the DMV, reach out to SacraCar Share. Let us know the car has no keys and no current title in hand yet. We’ll note that your vehicle needs a keyless flatbed pickup and answer any questions about paperwork, taxes, or what happens to your car after donation.
4. Receive your duplicate title and sign it for donation
When the replacement title arrives from the DMV, don’t delay. Check that your name and VIN match your car. At pickup, you’ll sign the title to transfer the vehicle for the benefit of Heritage for the Blind. This signed title is what legally completes the donation and allows us to move or sell the vehicle.
5. Schedule free keyless tow pickup anywhere in Sacramento Metro
Now we schedule your free tow. Tell us clearly that you have no keys so we send a flatbed with the proper gear. Whether your car is in Elk Grove, West Sacramento, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, or Downtown, pickup is at no cost to you. Our driver loads the car without keys and handles the transport.
6. Get your tax receipt and feel good about clearing that car
After the vehicle is picked up and processed, you’ll receive a donation receipt for at least $500 for federal tax purposes. For donations valued over $500, you’ll use IRS Form 1098-C with your return. Your problem car is gone, your driveway is clear, and you’ve helped support services for people who are blind or visually impaired.
Potential complications to watch for
The title isn’t in your name or has a different owner
Tip: If the DMV record shows a different owner, you may need additional paperwork (like a release of interest, lien release, or supporting documents for an inherited car). Check your DMV record early so you know exactly whose name the duplicate title will show before you plan the donation and tow.
Car is blocked in or not safely accessible for a flatbed
Tip: Even without keys, the tow operator must be able to get to the vehicle. If it’s behind a locked gate, inside a tight garage, or blocked by other cars, clear a path or arrange access ahead of time. Tell us any access issues so we can schedule the right truck and avoid last-minute cancellations.
Outstanding DMV issues like liens, fees, or stolen status
Tip: Active liens, stolen reports, or major DMV holds can delay or prevent donation. When you apply for the duplicate title, ask the DMV clerk if there are any blocks on the record. Resolving these before we schedule pickup keeps everything legal and smooth when you sign over the replacement title.
Waiting too long to sign and hand over the duplicate title
Tip: Your donation can’t be completed until the signed duplicate title is delivered. If you receive it and then misplace it, you may be back to step one. As soon as the title arrives in your mail in Sacramento, contact us to schedule pickup so you can sign it once and be done with the paperwork.
