If your car’s registration has expired, you can still donate it in the Sacramento Metro. With SacraCar Share, what matters is that you have a valid title in your name – not current tags or paid back fees. You do not need to renew the registration, pass smog first, or make it drivable. We arrange a free tow anywhere in the region and you still receive a donation receipt benefiting Heritage for the Blind.
Here’s how it works in California: DMV registration status and tags are separate from vehicle ownership. For a donation, we transfer ownership using your signed California title. Once our towing partner picks up the vehicle, it becomes the responsibility of SacraCar Share and Heritage for the Blind. You should submit a simple Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability with the California DMV so you’re not responsible for future tickets or fees. Whether your car is sitting in Midtown, Elk Grove, Natomas, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, or across the river in West Sacramento, we handle the pickup, the paperwork guidance, and the tax receipt – even with expired registration.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
Check that you still have a valid California title in your name
Expired registration is okay; the key is a clear title. Find your pink slip and confirm your name matches the registration and your ID. If there’s a lienholder listed, you may need a lien release. Don’t worry about tags, back fees, or smog – for donations, ownership on the title is what allows us to legally complete the transfer.
Call or submit our quick SacraCar Share online form
Share a few basics: year, make, model, location around Sacramento (for example, Arden-Arcade, Oak Park, Folsom, or Roseville) and that the registration is expired. We’ll confirm that your situation qualifies and answer any questions about your title, the condition of the car, and how the tax deduction works with Heritage for the Blind.
Schedule your free tow anywhere in the Sacramento Metro
You pick the day and general time window. Our licensed towing partner comes to you—whether the car is in your driveway in Land Park, on the street in Midtown, or at a shop in North Highlands. The vehicle does not need to start or drive. Towing is always free to you and you do not pay DMV back fees before pickup.
Sign over the title and hand keys to the tow driver
At pickup, you’ll sign the California title over to our charity per our guidance. The driver will confirm your ID, load the vehicle, and give you a preliminary pickup receipt. Once it’s on the truck, the vehicle is under our care, not yours. No current registration or smog is required to complete this process.
Submit a Notice of Transfer to the California DMV
After pickup, you’ll file a simple Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability with the DMV (online or by mail). This step tells the state that SacraCar Share/Heritage for the Blind now owns the car, protecting you from future tickets, towing bills, or renewal notices tied to those expired tags.
Receive your IRS tax receipt from Heritage for the Blind
You’ll get a donation receipt you can use for your federal taxes. For most donors, the minimum value is up to $500; if the vehicle sells for more, you’ll receive an updated IRS Form 1098-C. Your expired registration does not reduce your deduction. Your car helps fund services for people who are blind or visually impaired.
Potential complications to watch for
Missing or damaged California title
Tip: If you’ve lost your title or it’s badly damaged, the DMV will usually need to issue a duplicate before you can donate. Registration can be expired, but ownership must still be clear. We can walk you through which DMV form to request and how to complete it without renewing your registration or paying back fees.
Name on title doesn’t match the current owner
Tip: If the car is still in a previous owner’s, spouse’s, or relative’s name, Sacramento DMV rules require the legal owner (or estate) to sign it over. For inherited or divorce situations, there may be extra paperwork. Contact us first—we’ll help you understand what the DMV will likely need so you don’t waste a trip.
Registration suspended for insurance or other issues
Tip: In California, a registration can be suspended for lapsed insurance or certain fines. That usually doesn’t stop a donation, but we do need to know about it. Suspensions do not mean you must pay everything off first, because ownership is transferring; we’ll explain how that works so you’re not surprised later.
Vehicle stored somewhere with limited access
Tip: If your expired-tag vehicle is in an apartment lot, parking garage, or shop in Downtown, Midtown, or near Sac State, we may need gate codes or manager permission. Let us know about tight access or HOA rules when you schedule so the tow truck can get in, load safely, and complete your donation on the first visit.
